3 Reasons You Should Focus on Health Lighting

Have you ever had it?

When cloudy days and insufficient sunlight- do you feel exhausted and unable to concentrate?

When you spend a busy day indoors- because there is not even 30 minutes of sunlight, so you feel upset?

When you woke up in the middle of the night and wanted to go to the toilet- because you went from a dim bedroom to a bright toilet, and finally you lay in bed until dawn?

When you need to study late or you have to work late- because you have received excessive blue light from electronic devices, will it be difficult for you to have trouble falling asleep?

Life originates from light, and light has a significant effect on the human body. In fact, scientists discovered one pathway, the visual pathway that connects the retina to the visual cortex and helps us perceive the world around us. It is called intrinsically photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells (ipRGCs for short) that have less to do with what we see and everything to do with the body’s physiological response to light. These cells are dedicated to communicating important signals to the body, like when to go to sleep and when to wake up. It's often called the body clock.

Here are 3 reasons to focus on and create a light health environment.

Health Lighting - Increase Well-Being

Circadian rhythms keep us happy and healthy. Natural light has a significant impact on circadian rhythms because it’s both full-spectrum and dynamic.

Nowadays, the rapid development of artificial lighting has expanded the time and space available to humans. People spend nearly 90% of their time indoors- working or studying by light during the day, and at home watching TV, iPad or surfing the Internet at night. However, the lack of exposure to sunlight disrupts the body's inherent biological rhythms, and also brings a series of health problems- myopia, metabolic disorders, immune decline, mood disorders and so on.

Keeping the circadian rhythm in balance is essential to our physiological well-being. An effective lighting system designed around natural circadian rhythms helps occupants maintain a normal sleep schedule and feel much happier and healthier.

Health Lighting- Improve productivity

The most appropriate lighting is an indispensable element of creating a comfortable and productive office environment for employees. The flexible way of lighting is the best way to achieve a healthy light environment, with appropriate hues and reaction to natural and ambient light, has been shown to boost productivity by 12%. For that reason, more and more office lighting systems have embraced smart lighting, and in doing so, enabled a more comfortable environment for employees. To take a simple example, when meeting in a conference room, lights can be dimmed to ensure that glare against this screen is minimized, retaining attendees’ comfort.

Light that is adapted to the natural rhythm of the human body is able to improve vitality and concentration. Smart lighting gives a beautiful aesthetic to any workspace with a vast range of design features that can be programmed to perform any number of tasks and scenarios
as needed. Office use can enhance concentration and performance during working time and aid relaxation and rejuvenation at the end of the day.

Health Lighting- Benefit Human Health

The quality of our lives depends on light. Light quality differences are clearly visible on the below scale. Fig.1 shows the spectrum of sunlight is the reference. Fig.2 and Fig.3 show the spectrum of fluorescent lamps and LED light respectively.

The Morstar lighting system, we can utilise the complete light spectrum- from cold color, through neutral color on to warm color. This enables us to follow the natural rhythm of the daylight in indoor applications. The colour rendering index is excellent throughout at CRI > 85. The key to this high colour fidelity and colour rendering quality are the LED modules which combine blue, red and white light instead of red, green and blue. The spectrum achieved with the LED technology is very similar to the spectrum of the sun, which is comfortable for the eyes.

Designing lighting for health and well-being is Morstar's mission and desire. Lighting systems designed according to circadian rhythms can provide many benefits:

  • Improved mood
  • Higher productivity
  • Better metabolic function
  • Healthier immune systems
  • Improved memory and cognitive function

For example, when Morstar's lighting designers revamp Richard's garage lighting solution, or create a comfortable office lighting environment for Amanda, we add intelligent controls that allow the lighting system that automatically dims, changes color over time, and saves energy. We did this because it increases employee or users satisfaction.

Regardless of whether you use traditional light or smart lighting, Morstar's experienced architects can help you find and install the perfect system for your building layout and your occupants’ needs.

We believe in the power of light.
