If you've spent a lot of time walking around city streets, you're no stranger to running up against the street lights on either side. These public infrastructures are very convenient light sources during dark hours. Especially at night when there is no moonlight or other light sources, it can at least make it safer to walk or even drive with a sense of direction. However, have you ever found, in the countryside or even the seaside road. We often see street lights, but why don't we often see any power grid? The answer to this question is that you encounter dusk to down bright solar LED street lights.

So is solar LED street lighting worth the investment?

Currently, solar street lighting is one of the latest technologies to support green initiatives. They are environmentally friendly, smart and economical street  lighting solutions. Solar LED street lights help to provide a good living environment while reducing operating and energy costs. Globally, some countries have converted traditional street lights to LED street lights with good results. According to World Energy, the global average annual solar radiation alone can produce as much energy as 140 cubic meters of natural gas, 200 kilograms of coal, or a barrel of oil. This means that, with the right optimization process, solar energy can indeed replace the modern energy sources we have today.

How do solar street lights work?

Solar-powered LED street lights rely on the photovoltaic effect, which allows solar cells to convert sunlight into usable electricity. This is done when negatively charged electrons push solar energy into the positively charged space in the cell. This process allows the solar energy to be transferred to the electron-becoming direct current. Similar to the way the electricity-based gadget works, wires from the solar cell are then connected to the battery to transmit fresh direct current from sunlight.

When night comes, the solar cell will stop the conversion process as the sunlight disappears. The photoreceptor will help shut down the solar cell when there isn't enough sunlight for the conversion. This is the time when the battery starts to power the LED lights through other wiring.

Conclusion

Although the initial investment is higher than conventional street lights, solar street lights are independent of the utility grid. As a result, operating costs are minimized. The risk of accidents is minimized by eliminating external wires compared to traditional street lights. Solar street lights require less maintenance.
